Colorado’s COVID-19 contact tracking app unveiled on Sunday
Colorado Springs, Colorado (KRDO)-Colorado will be the first state in the country to deploy a phone app to help track cases of COVID-19.
Colorado has partnered with Google and Apple to develop the Exposure Notification Express, which will be released on Sunday.
The· The app is expected to notify the user if the user may be infected with COVID-19.
At 9am on Sunday morning, Coloradans will be notified on their mobile phone and will be able to choose whether or not to use the app. This app is available for both iPhone and Android. Users can opt out of the system at any time.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment believes the new exposure notification app will speed up contact tracing efforts.
If you and someone near you have an app on your phone, your phone will exchange what is called a “token” via Bluetooth. These “tokens” record a close interaction for 14 days. If a person who owns the app tests positive for COVID-19, those who have a “token” in close contact with that person will be warned that the COVID-19 patient will give permission.
“The X-date will display an alert on your mobile phone that you may have been infected with COVID,” said Sarah Thumberg of CDPHE.
KRDO asked state health officials how Coloradans protects personal information when using the app. State officials claim that hacking the system does not compromise relevant or personal information.
“This technology is no more secure. No personally identifiable data is collected. It uses Bluetooth instead of GPS. Therefore, it has no location or name. No test data. No health information.” Said Tuneberg. Said.
