According to Nursing Home Ireland (NHI), staffing continues to be the number one issue in the fight against COVID-19.
According to the organization, 40 out of 570 housing facilities in the country currently have virus clusters.
Earlier this week, Galway’s nursing home sought help after an outbreak.

He states: “What we saw early on was a high level of community infection, which had very tragic consequences, as we all know throughout the nursing home sector.
“As we saw in July and August, infections in the community have been controlled, but clusters have been closed daily.
“But obviously, due to the high level of community propagation, we’re seeing the cluster moving in another direction again. This is a very disappointing move.”
He said it was a “big challenge” to prevent the situation that happened at Galway’s nursing home again this week.
Daily said: “There are about 570 nursing homes nationwide, some of which are operated by HSE, the majority of which are private and voluntary.
“Thankfully, there are about 40 open clusters at the moment, which means that the majority are not infected with COVID and should be left alone.
“Of the 40 people infected with COVID, there are a lot of staff out for a positive COVID test, so about 4 people are having problems.
“What we need to ensure is that in that situation, with those outliers, there is a quick response from the HSE, because staffing is currently the only biggest issue.
“Early detection is taking place, but if you have a large number of staff, the only way to address that challenge is to prioritize care facility staff and move them from one location to another.”
He said that “important learning” from situations like those that happened in Galway is that nursing homes need to be integrated into a broader health and social care system.
