CDC warns of Listeria monocytogenes associated with Delimite for sale in Florida, Massachusetts, and New York
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning on Friday about the outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes affecting residents of three states.
Ten people from Florida, Massachusetts, and New York were hospitalized for illness. One death has been reported in Florida. Of a total of 10 cases, 7 have been reported in Massachusetts.
Citing epidemiological evidence, the CDC said deli meat was likely the cause of the outbreak. In an interview with nine sick people, they all reported eating Italian-style meat such as salami, mortadella, and prosciutto. “They reported buying pre-packaged deli meats and sliced meats at deli counters in various locations,” the CDC said.
The particular type of meat and common suppliers have not yet been identified.
“People at high risk of Listeria monocytogenes should avoid eating deli meat until the internal temperature is heated to 165 degrees Fahrenheit or steamed just before serving,” said the CDC.
Infection is caused after eating food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The disease is mild in most people, but it can have serious consequences for immunocompromised people, pregnant women, newborns, and the elderly. Some people who get sick develop severe bloodstream and brain infections that cause meningitis.
