Police, health leaders around Ozark share safety tips ahead of Halloween
(KY3)-It’s only one week since Halloween! This year, it may look a little different in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Leaders around Ozark, including leaders from the Branson Police Department and the Springfield-Greene County Health Department, say some additional steps can help to safely celebrate Halloween.
This year, Branson police are encouraging alternative activities, including the following, which have a lower risk of potential exposure to the virus:
- Carve and decorate pumpkins outside, keeping a social distance from your neighbors and friends.
- Virtual Halloween costume contest.
- An outdoor movie night with my family.
- Halloween scavenger hunt for kids. Give them a list of Halloween-themed items to look for while walking outdoors while admiring the Halloween decorations.
Branson police say they will consider these additional safety tips for those who do trick or treat:
- Purchase a flame-retardant costume and make sure the mask does not block your view.
- Use flashlights, reflectors, and glow sticks to keep your child visible.
- Treat it as a trick or family and only approach bright homes.
- Accept only pre-packaged candies
- Don’t assume that the driver will meet you, they probably can’t see.
The Springfield-Green County Health Department issued guidelines almost a month before Halloween.
For trick or treat, the health department recommends monitoring your distance this year by making sure there is enough space between you and other groups when visiting.
Health leaders also recommend only trick-or-treats with people living in the home, compared to a large group of friends. A non-contact trick or treat is recommended to limit close contact. Instead of ringing the doorbell or giving someone a candy, you can remove the bowl or put a candy bag full of candy that your child can grab.
