Coronavirus: Google reveals travel habits during pandemic

Google will track public movements during the coronavirus pandemic.
Tech company Publish details of different types of places for people In the UK, by county, similar data is displayed for the other 130 countries.
The plan is to issue regular updates, referring to figures that have returned to activity two or three days ago.
The company promises to protect personal privacy.
The readings are based on location data collected via either the Google Maps app or the company’s other mobile services.
The company typically uses this to identify when certain museums, shops, and other places are most busy, and to modify driving routes so that drivers can avoid traffic.

In this case, the measurements are analyzed to show how busy the following types of locations are compared to the beginning of the year before lockdown was introduced.
- Retail and recreation
- Grocery and pharmacy
- Parks, beaches, plazas
- Bus, subway and railway stations
- Office buildings and other workplaces
- Residential
Google said it hoped the information would help public health directors and others manage outbreaks.
“This information can help authorities understand important travel changes, make business-hour recommendations, and inform delivery service offerings,” wrote the blog.
“Similarly, sustained visits to transportation hubs may indicate the need to add additional buses or trains to allow people to spread to place social distances not.”
The company states that it anonymized records and mixed them with randomly generated data to protect the history of individual users. Device owner can also decide not to provide data.
“The data may be surprising for people who don’t know how much information Google is collecting,” said Rory Cellan-Jones, a BBC technical correspondent.
“It also offers interesting insights into how lockdown is working or was working 48 hours ago.
“And unintended consequences can occur. People may decide to try to avoid busy places or be surprised at the number of people going out and join them.”
The first report covers the data for March 29 and compares it to the median for the five weeks from January 3 to February 6.

Google’s launch took place the day after EU Attorney General Vera Jourova asked large technology companies to share more data with scientists fighting viruses.
She also accused them of doing nothing more to crack down on the wrong information.
“We are still aware that major platforms continue to monetize and incentivize disinformation and harmful content about pandemics,” the commissioner said.
“This should be stopped, and the financial barriers to clickbait disinformation and commercial fraud should be stopped,” he said.
