Hyderabad-based vaccine manufacturer developing a unique intranasal coronavirus vaccine

Bharat Biotech, a vaccine maker, is developing a unique intranasal vaccine for coronavirus. FluGen, a virologist and vaccine company at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has an international collaboration with Bharat Biotech to launch a unique technology for Covid-19 called Koroflu, a Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech announced on Friday. Vaccine development and testing has begun.
Koroflu is built on the backbone of FluGen’s influenza vaccine candidate known as M2SR. M2SR is a self-limited influenza virus that elicits an immune response to influenza, based on an invention by UW Madison virologist and co-founder of FluGen, Yoshihiro Kawaoka and Gabriele Neumann.
Kawaoka’s lab inserts the gene sequence of SARS-CoV-2, a novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 disease, into M2SR, and the new vaccine also induces immunity against coronavirus.
Improvements to the concept of the Koroflu vaccine and testing in laboratory animal models at UW-Madison are expected to take 3 to 6 months. Bharat Biotech, located in Hyderabad, India, is ramping up production to test for human safety and efficacy. Koroflu may enter human clinical trials by the fall of 2020.
