Early detection is the key to survival of colon cancer-Lifestyle-Times Record

Dear Reader: Unfortunately, you are right about the increasing number of young adults currently diagnosed with colon cancer. And recently, with the death of actor Chadwick Boseman from the disease, anxiety has become a public consciousness. With the exception of skin cancer, colorectal and rectal cancer (collectively referred to as colorectal cancer) is the third most commonly diagnosed type of cancer that occurs in both men and women in the United States. These account for more than 50,000 deaths each year.
Until recently, colon cancer was not widespread in young adults. This was reflected in screening guidelines published by the American Cancer Society, which recommends that regular screening for colorectal and rectal cancer begin at age 50. However, statistics show that young adults are increasingly affected by this type of cancer. Of the estimated 135,000 cases of colorectal cancer predicted this year, at least 12% will be found in people under the age of 50.
As a result, the screening guidelines have been updated. It is currently recommended that regular screening begin at age 45. People with inflammatory bowel disease and those with a family history are at increased risk of colorectal cancer. They may be advised to start showing sooner.
Disease screening includes colonoscopy. Colon endoscopy is used to identify and, if possible, eliminate polyps and other growth. A stool test can help identify blood in the stool. Each of these can be an indicator of cancer or precancerous status. According to a study published last year, the latest age guidelines for screening for colorectal cancer can prevent about 30,000 potential cases each year and save 11,000 lives. However, not all insurers are participating in the new guidelines, and some patients will have to pay for the previous screening themselves.
Researchers are still uncertain as to why the disease is affecting an increasingly young population. Some people suspect changes in behavioral and environmental factors and have begun research to learn more. Some are worried that young adults are ignoring the physical symptoms that may indicate the presence of colorectal cancer. These include the appearance of bloody stools, especially when the blood is bright red. Rectal bleeding; persistent pressure in the intestines and abdomen that is not relieved by defecation; ongoing abdominal pain and cramps; weakness or malaise and unexplained weight loss. Another indicator is changes in bowel habits that last for more than a few days, such as constipation, diarrhea, and changes in stool shape. If someone experiences one or more of these symptoms, it is important to check with your healthcare provider. Fortunately, colorectal cancer is very curable if detected early.
