Badger Give Back Blood Drive aims to collect plasma from students who have recovered from COVID-19
Madison, Wisconsin (WMTV)-UW-Madison Jr. Elizabeth Schitzler is doing what she can to give back or help others after a positive coronavirus test. Kitslaar plans to donate plasma to help patients fight the coronavirus through The Badgers Give Back Blood Drive.
The drive is led by the UW-Madison sophomore Brodian Death. Students who have recovered from COVID-19 are encouraged to donate, and their plasma can help patients and benefit Madison’s COVID-19 convalescent plasma program.
According to Dr. William Hartman, Principal Investigator for COVID-19 Clinical Research at UW Health, plasma from people who have recovered from the coronavirus can be a useful tool to help patients who are currently fighting the virus.
“Recovery plasma has been a cure for the coronavirus since the pandemic almost began here in the United States,” Hartman said. “It’s the liquid part of the blood, and those antibodies are still in their plasma because people who have recovered from the coronavirus from COVID-19 have already built antibodies that have defeated the virus. You can take the plasma and give it to someone who is currently suffering from COVID-19. We hope that these antibodies will boost the immunity of the patient and defeat the virus. “
According to Hartman, one student can help at least two or three patients with convalescent plasma donations.
“Blood is a necessary resource in our hospital. We can always use more blood,” he said. “This will be achieved in two ways-they will be able to extract plasma from the blood, and they will be able to use the blood as well. Each student will have several different patients. The potential to help is incredible. “
One student who wants to help is Kitslaar, who was quarantined positive on Wednesday, October 14th with a coronavirus test.
“I was a little shocked at first because the people near me weren’t infected with the virus yet, so I was really infected with the virus near my house,” she said. “You find it so realistic that anyone can get it anytime, anywhere, I still don’t know where I got the frustrating virus.”
Kitslaar said she and her roommates took precautions when they returned to campus and created a schedule for regular testing to ensure they were virus-free. She said she knew she had symptoms when she started to have symptoms.
“My first symptoms were body and muscle aches,” she said. “It was really terrible, I had a school, I could hardly get out of bed.”
She also said she developed fatigue, headaches and coughs, but thinks she wasn’t so ill and was lucky to have to go to the hospital. Fortunately, her roommate was not infected with the virus.
Now, after isolating and recovering from her symptoms, Kitslaar wants to donate blood.
“I think this is a great opportunity. I’m very excited to donate plasma and help others recover from the virus,” she said.
After she experiences everything, Kitslaar sees a silver lining.
“It just helps others and gives back to the community,” she said. “And for me, another amazing part of this is that I can contribute to the study with convalescent plasma and see the changes and how it helps people.”
