One in five municipal hospital staff is infected with Covid and antibodies indicate
Almost one in ten Dublin hospital staff has antibodies to Covid-19, even though they have never tested positive for the virus.
A new study of staff at the University of Tarat Hospital (TUH) also shows that nearly one in five staff members surveyed caught the coronavirus at one time.
The first study of this type, conducted in an Irish hospital, examined the SARS-CoV-2 seropositive rate of healthcare workers for the three months from July to October.
Of the 1200 staff involved, antibodies against Covid-19 were found in 18 pc.
This increased by 20 percent for staff with roles that had more direct contact with patients, such as nurses and doctors, but decreased to 13 percent for workers with less direct contact with patients.

Prior to the study, 12 pc of participants were diagnosed with Covid-19 at some stage.
However, excluding the group of known infections, the serum prevalence of the group not confirmed to be infected with the virus was approximately 1 in 10 at 7.5 pc, or approximately 88.
The study also noted that more than half of these were suspected of being infected at some point, even though they had not been tested positive.
Dr. Anna Rose Prior, a consultant microbiologist at Tarat University Hospital, said the results indicate that the majority of Covid-19 infections in health care workers are undetected.
She said this supports the requirement of universal mask use for all patient interactions during a pandemic.
This protects staff and minimizes the risk of healthcare professionals unknowingly transmitting the infection to patients.
“This study can identify colleagues who develop and do not develop a measurable immune response to Covid-19.
“This study is a 12-month study, which means we will track all participants who want to continue the study for 12 months and measure antibody levels at multiple points in time,” said Dr. Anna Rose Prior.
“This gives us two important pieces of information.
“The first is to understand how long a measurable level of antibody against Covid-19 will be present in the participants, and the second is how many staff members will be present during the upcoming wave of infection. Is to develop an antibody?

Of the approximately 1,200 staff members who participated in the survey, 943 were women and 233 were men.
Participants represented about one-third of all staff working at Tarat University Hospital.

“There was a clear request from staff to measure antibodies, and the community and departments helped sample collection to ensure team members were involved, so we pushed the project somewhat,” the hospital said.

The study lasts 12 months, so antibody levels continue to be tested at different times for aspiring participants.
In August, HSE published a study on the Covid-19 antibody in the Irish population and found that 1.7 pc contained the antibody.
