The ICU occupancy remains stable despite the surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations in the Louisville area.news
Louisville, Kentucky (WDRB)-COVID-19 infection continues to spread throughout the community, but hospitals have not seen the same trend in intensive care units so far.
On Monday, Governor of Kentucky Andy Beshear released new recommendations to communities facing an increasing prevalence of COVID-19, including Louisville. Rising infection rates over the past few weeks have increased hospitalizations for COVID-19 patients from the region’s three major healthcare providers, Baptist, Norton and U of L.
“The number of hospitalized patients is increasing, but the number of ICU patients is not increasing,” said Dr. Jason Smith, Chief Medical Officer of U of L Health. “These numbers are relatively stable throughout this process.”
As of Monday, 939 patients are being treated for U of L Health throughout the system. Of them, 75 were tested positive for COVID-19. Of those, 14 are in the ICU.
Norton Healthcare has a similar trend. Currently, more than 120 patients are in the ICU room, 25 of whom are tested positive for COVID-19.
Baptist Health did not provide accurate numbers, but COO Patrick Falbay said, “Compared to the early days of the pandemic, the proportion of patients requiring emergency beds and ventilators has decreased.” He said hospitalizations increased.
Many doctors have pointed to an increase in infections among young people as to why infection rates continue to rise, but those in need of criticality remain stagnant. However, with regard to capacity, there are at least some concerns about how the cold and flu seasons affect hospitals.
Dr. Mark F. Newman, Executive Vice President of Health Affairs, University of Kentucky, said: “I hope the results of the flu in the Southern Hemisphere will not be a bad flu year.”
The calm of COVID-19 cases has allowed regional hospitals to prepare for a surge and consequent capacity issues. For example, Norton Healthcare has 145 ICU beds, and you can add an additional 100. U of L Health, Baptist Health and UK Healthcare all also have the ability to add an ICU bed.
