UC Health is looking for Coloradans to participate in the COVID-19 vaccination trial – CBS Denver

Loveland, Colorado (CBS4) — Over 1,000 Coloradans have the opportunity to become the first recipients of the new COVID-19 vaccine. The Phase 3 Clinic trial will test the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine through UC Health in northern Colorado.

Ideal participants in AstraZeneca vaccination trials are essential workers such as teachers, first responders, grocery stores and healthcare professionals. Some test participants have already been identified and selected.

A total of 1,500 people will be selected, some of whom will be given a placebo.

The trial will be from Loveland. However, participants do not have to be residents of northern Colorado. However, you will have to be willing to commute to a test facility in northern Colorado throughout the process.

“This allows a large number of people to get the vaccine or placebo to see if it really works for weeks, months, or up to two years,” said Principal Dr. Gary Luckasen. Investigator and Medical Director of UC Health’s Clinical Research Program in Northern Colorado. “The size of the group is very important because we can get a lot of information about viruses, vaccines, and how they interact.”

UCHealth said the AstraZeneca vaccine had previously demonstrated the ability to elicit a COVID-19 antibody response in humans.

Unlike other vaccinations, the AstraZeneca vaccine is an adenovirus. It is a combination of an active cold virus and a protein that is external to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

This is the second time UC Health has been selected for the COVID vaccine trial. In recent months, it has been initially focused on the Moderna vaccine and tested on the UC Health Anschutz campus.
