New COVID-19 outbreak hit Colorado prison, prison | Local news
Colorado identified 13 new coronavirus outbreaks in prisons, prisons, and half-baked homes in October as the state tackled a widespread transmission of the disease.
The state prison was the site of the first outbreak in Colorado — the Sterling correctional facility reported 607 cases among prisoners. According to state data, three prisoners have died and only 15 remain ill. However, new outbreaks are occurring elsewhere. Fremont Correctional has 419 cases between staff and prisoners. 154 prisoners were still infected and one prisoner died.
A youthful criminal system based in Pueblo, which occurred only eight days after birth, infected 75 prisoners and 12 personnel.

According to the state’s Department of Corrections, there are 280 activities among seven prison inmates, with Fremont and YOS being the largest. The outbreak in Buena Vista Collective was confirmed by the state last week. Twenty-six prisoners and 18 staff were infected with the virus. One prisoner has recovered (correction department does not list staff recovery on the COVID dashboard).
All eight prison cases in Centennial Prison are still active. According to the state, 12 staff members also tested positive. More than 40 new cases among Sterling prisoners were also identified in October, according to state outbreak data released on September 30 and updated this week.
In a statement, the state’s Department of Public Health and Environment said that people living in the facility were “at high risk of being infected with COVID-19, as physical distances can be difficult.”
“The outbreaks are steadily increasing across the state, and prisons, prisons and camps are no exception,” a spokeswoman for the agency said in an email. “This shows an increase in disease transmission throughout the state. This certainly reflects our number of cases. We work closely with these facilities and correction agencies. Beyond state-controlled facilities, orthodontic housing facilities have reported outbreaks elsewhere in Colorado. Aurora’s Immigration Customs Enforcement Facility confirmed 11 new cases in October. The outbreak there was officially confirmed by the state in late May, but it is still an active cluster.
Several migration centers have also confirmed outbreaks this month, but not as much as large facilities. At least four of these facilities reported outbreaks in October, with a total of more than 20.
Of the 15 active outbreaks in prisons, prisons, or interim facilities, more than 1,400 cases have been reported (almost half of them are due to Sterling’s months of outbreaks). More than 1,200 prisoners and residents are positive and have 202 staff.
