A high sugar diet can damage the gut flora and increase the risk of IBD
A new study led by UT Southwestern researchers suggests that a high-sugar diet may contribute to the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The study found that mice fed high levels of glucose showed changes in the gut microbiota that contributed to inflammation, ultimately leading to the development of colitis.

The new study focused specifically on the effects of sugar on the gut flora and intestinal inflammation. The group of mice was given an aqueous solution containing 10% sucrose, fructose, or glucose. After eating each sugar-spike diet for 7 days, the animal microbiome was sequenced to detect acute changes.
Each type of edible sugar has been found to significantly alter the gut microbial population of animals. However, glucose, in particular, has been found to carry the most serious confusion. Similar experiments in animals designed to develop colitis showed a significant increase in the severity of post-high glucose postprandial symptoms.
Expanding what is actually happening in the animal’s intestine reveals an increase in the population of bacteria known to produce enzymes that break down the mucous layer that protects the lining of the large intestine.
“The mucous layer protects the intestinal mucosal tissue from infiltration of the gut flora,” the researchers explain in the study. “Therefore, the high abundance of mucolytic bacteria such as Akkermansia muciniphila and Bacteroides fragilis in glucose-treated mice is a potential risk of the intestinal mucus barrier.”
Previous studies have shown that when bacteria and other toxins break through the barriers that line the large intestine, intestinal inflammation can begin. Further confirming this mechanism, fecal transplantation experiments between healthy and high-sugar diet mice confirmed that changes in the microbiome fundamentally affect the severity of IBD.
“No exacerbation of sugar-induced colitis was observed when mice were treated with antibiotics or maintained in a sterile environment. This is because the altered microflora plays an important role in the pathogenesis of sugar-induced colitis. It suggests that we have achieved this, “the researchers wrote in the study. “In addition, sterile mice with established microbiota of sugar-treated mice showed increased susceptibility to colitis.”
Researchers hypothesize that a high-sugar diet in humans may be a key factor in supporting the rapid rise in IBD prevalence across Western countries over the past few decades. For example, high fructose corn syrup glucose levels have been suggested as potential risk factors for common forms of IBD, including colitis and Crohn’s disease.
