Stephen Hair: Do leaders rethink their approach? -Opinion-Topeka Capital-Journal
I’m constantly reading about Bill Refern’s approach to managing the status of COVID in a growing local newspaper.
In the October 23 edition of the Topeka Capital Journal, he mentioned the Great Barrington Declaration. He said he offered another way of thinking. He was reportedly said, “Maybe they are right. Maybe they are wrong. I don’t know.”
In general, most of us leave it to qualified people who are considered expert opinions when they “don’t know.” In other words, it is an opinion that is more important than an amateur’s point of view.
Specifically, the Great Barrington Declaration states that the restrictions associated with the restrictions adopted to control the spread of the coronavirus are dangerous. It does not deny it.
The Declaration also states that efforts should be made towards achieving herd immunity.
Herd immunity works in only two ways. By vaccination with an effective vaccine and / or by infecting a sufficient number of people and eliminating the disease. Vaccines do not yet exist and will probably not be widely available until sometime next year — suppose an effective vaccine has been found.
It leaves an infection.
People infected with the virus have not been proven to be immune. This means they can get it again. Sometimes it has far more serious consequences. Given the mathematics of the COVID-19 virus, about 70% (200 million people) of the population need to be infected to achieve something close to herd immunity. Imagine how this would affect hospitals and healthcare systems. They are overwhelmed and simply unable to respond.
Given the current mortality rate, this could lead to the deaths of millions of people. And those who “recover” from the virus have long-term consequences. Conditions such as decreased vital capacity and brain damage.
Herd immunity is achieved by protecting people from the virus, rather than exposing them to the virus. Historically, as a public health strategy, herd immunity has never been used as a means of controlling the outbreak of disease, not to mention the global pandemic.
Given the facts (and these are the facts), we can see that allowing unlimited transmission of the disease results in a continuous increase in cases, hospitalizations, and ultimately deaths.
Perhaps it makes more sense to try to limit the transmission of the disease by more common means, such as washing hands, covering the face, and limiting the number of people who can gather.
Of course, this is a hassle. Absolute confusion. And yes, it creates stress and probably “… is irreparably harming school and mental health …” But imagine the stress and harm created by millions of dead people. ..
Bill, rethink your approach to this situation. Act as a leader who relies on the opinions of experts and serve the greater well-being of the citizens who have elected you. Find ways to help people overcome this and break the cycle of infection.
