Zoo Knoxville Tiger Tests Positive for SARS-CoV-2

Knoxville, TennesseeWSMV) — Zoo Knoxville tigers tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the same virus that causes COVID-19 in humans, according to zoo officials.
Malayan tigers Arya, Bashir, and Tanvir experienced “mild cough, lethargy, and loss of appetite.” Zoo officials said the animals were tested for “various potential causes, including SARS-CoV-2.”
Zoo officials said the test results confirmed that the 11-year-old man Bashir was positive in the test. Authorities added that confirmation tests for Arya and Tanvir are underway, but “they are presumed to be positive.”
The tiger is “released from quarantine if it is asymptomatic for 72 hours and all diagnostic tests are negative or 14 days after the last positive test according to the CDC guidelines.”
A team of veterinarians from the University of Tennessee Veterinary School takes care of three tigers. Zoo officials said Arya, Bashir and Tanvir were “alert, active and no longer symptomatic.”
The Zoo Knoxville crew is working to identify the cause of the infection. Authorities added that “asymptomatic infected staff working near the tiger when caring for the tiger” may have led to the infection.
Other animals in Zoo Knoxville “show no signs of illness,” officials said.
