The flu season is just around the corner, and Marshall County Public Health Nurse Pat Thompson said the vaccine is here. She encourages people to get vaccinated — especially this year with a COVID-19 pandemic.

“A large number of sick people can overwhelm the health care system.” Thompson said. “Waiting time in the ER can be long. People may not be hospitalized because there may be no room for them.”

She said that anyone who is not allergic to flu shots and is more than 6 months old should be vaccinated.

“Especially those with chronic illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease and those who have had a stroke” Thompson said. “Their immune system is not that strong.”

It will take two weeks for the flu vaccine to work, so I hope it will be available sooner or later. If someone got the flu shortly after vaccination, Thompson said it was because it hadn’t started yet.

The symptoms of the flu are:

• Chills

• Malaise

•diarrhea.

She said the season was too early and there are no tests yet to see if anyone has the flu.
