Outbreak of COVID-19 in Lantern House infects 48 inhabitants | Health Care
OGDEN — The Lantern House homeless shelter announced on Friday night that 48 people staying at the facility had tested positive for COVID-19. The cause of death has not been confirmed, but two people who tested positive died.
According to a press release from the shelter, the two who died were identified as an elderly male resident and a single mother who was staying at the facility with their children. According to the statement, the child is placed with a close relative.
As of Friday, the Midtown Community Health Center and the Utah Department of Health conducted 220 coronavirus tests at the Lantern House. 37 men, 10 women and 1 child were tested positive.
Sasha Clark, a spokesman for Dicio Group, a public relations firm contracted by Weber County, confirmed that men and women would be isolated in two separate buildings within the facility.
“During the pandemic, the Lantern House had a strict cleaning and disinfection protocol,” Clark said in an email. “In the last few days, these protocols have been tuned and increased to meet the needs of their outbreak.”
She added that the Lantern House follows the guidelines of all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for disinfecting collective living facilities.
The Weber-Morgan Health Department has helped Lantern House hire additional staff to care for individuals who test positive for the virus. According to a press release, the facility is instructed to seek emergency treatment if the health of any of these residents deteriorates.
The shelter will continue to serve homeless individuals, Clark said. However, according to a press release, The Lantern House is looking for “appropriate accommodation” for individuals with facilities that test negative.
