More than 1,000 virus cases occur in South Dakota for 5 consecutive days
Sioux Falls, SD (AP) — South Dakota health officials reported more than 1,000 cases of coronavirus on Sunday for the fifth consecutive day, increasing the total number of positive tests to more than 45,000.
The update showed 1,332 new infections in 2,638 people tested. Twelve deaths were reported on the final day, and the total number of deaths from complications increased from COVID-19 to 437. 421 people are hospitalized, including 79 in the intensive care unit.
Since the pandemic began, the state has confirmed 45,437 cases.
Health officials said there were 21,827 new infections in October, following 8,880 in September. The number of people receiving treatment at health care facilities throughout the state doubled in October.
According to researchers at Johns Hopkins University, South Dakota has had about 1,517 new cases per 100,000 in the last two weeks, the second highest number of new cases per person after North Dakota.
