“We know that one of the causes of insulin resistance is inflammation,” says Dr. Mondal. “We wanted to find out if and how hyperinsulinemia causes inflammation in the body. Researchers have identified SIRT1, an important protein molecule that is suppressed by hyperinsulinemia. They found that a decrease in SIRT1 activated another protein called NFkB, which caused inflammation and provided a link between hyperinsulinemia and systemic inflammation.
The team has also found a solution to this problem. Researchers have found that low-dose naltrexone (LDN), a commonly administered drug for opiate addiction, can activate SIRT1 thereby reducing inflammation and increasing insulin sensitivity of cells. did. The significance of this discovery is immeasurable. “Low-dose naltrexone may restore some of the diabetes-related events in cell and animal models,” said Dr. Mondal, who is convinced that this is a viable path for type 2 diabetes management. say. Naltrexone is already an FDA-approved drug and is used to treat opioid addiction and can be easily reused to reduce inflammation and control diabetes.
