Looking for potential donors for convalescent plasma therapy, researchers at Mount Sinai Health Systems in New York City screened more than 72,000 recovered patients between March and October.
Of these, more than 30,000 were positive for antibodies, and many showed prominent immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody reactions. The researchers evaluated the antibodies and followed 121 plasma donors to see how long the immune response lasted. Researchers found that their immune response was stable after about five months.
Convalescent plasma therapy uses plasma from recovered coronavirus patients to treat other infected patients.
Although not yet definitive, researchers say these antibodies reduce the chances of reinfection and, if it does occur, can cause milder illness.
A new study, led by Dr. Ania Wajnberg and his colleagues, is inconsistent with other recent studies, including findings published in June, showing antibody decline eight weeks after infection.
One potential explanation: The study targeted different viral antigens. This may suggest that the antibody response over time depends on a particular antigen, the researchers said.
Studies have shown that assessing antibody response in mild, asymptomatic cases is particularly important as it accounts for the majority of COVID infections. Researchers plan to continue to evaluate these participants.
