For this study, O’Kelly’s team built a device consisting of sections of tubes with a sample of fabric in the center. Aerosolized particles were pushed into one end and the levels before and after passing through the fabric were measured at a speed similar to coughing.
Researchers have also tested how easy it is to breathe through each fabric.
“A mask that blocks particles very well, but restricts breathing, is not an effective mask,” Okelly said. “For example, denim was very effective at blocking particles, but it’s hard to breathe, so making a mask with old jeans is probably not a good idea. N95 masks are much easier to breathe than any fabric. In combination with a similar level of filtration. “
She said it was a matter of finding the right balance.
“We need materials that are effective in filtering particles, but we also need to be aware that there is no risk of inhaling potentially harmful fibers and lint,” Okelly added. ..
