Vietnam tests monkeys with coronavirus vaccine

Vietnam has begun testing a coronavirus vaccine against monkeys, local media reported Tuesday.
A Southeast Asian country vaccine and biological producer (Vabiotech) has tested the vaccine in 12 rhesus monkeys, a member of the Macaca mulatta family, according to daily news in Vietnam.
The test for monkeys between the ages of 3 and 5 was conducted on October 27, on the island of Roy off the coast of Quang Ninh in the northern part of the country.
Mammals weighing more than 3 kilograms (6.6 lbs) have been checked for health and are not infected with the disease, Vabiotech director Do Tuan Dat reportedly said.
Vaccinated monkeys will be monitored in two separate groups for 3 months, after which blood samples will be examined in Hanoi for further analysis.
According to the report, the test follows a similar model that can be performed on humans. “The animals are vaccinated twice, with injections every 18-21 days.”
Vabiotech tested the vaccine in mice in June.
Scientists also test antigens in other animals, but the results of the tests in monkeys are “the basis for the next step and suggestions for testing vaccines in people,” the report said.
According to the US-based Johns Hopkins University, Vietnam reported 1,192 cases of the new virus, including 35 deaths and 1,065 recovery.
Over 100 coronavirus vaccines are being developed worldwide to mitigate the global crisis.
