An outbreak of bird flu was confirmed on a farm in Cheshire on Monday.

Temporary controlled areas of 3 km and 10 km have been set up around the site of infection near Frodsham to limit the risk of spreading the disease.

Avian influenza (bird flu) H5N8 strain confirmed-unrelated to the H5N2 strain found in a small commercial facility near Deal in Kent early Monday.

All 13,000 birds on the farm are “humanely disposed of” to limit the spread of the disease.

Further testing is underway to determine if it is a highly pathogenic strain and if it is associated with a virus that is currently prevalent in Europe.

The Public Health Service (PHE) advises that the risk to public health from viruses is very low, and the Food Standards Agency advises that avian influenza has a very low food safety risk for British consumers. ..

“Bird zookeepers need to be aware of signs of illness, report suspicious illnesses immediately, and ensure that they maintain good biosecurity on the premises.”

“We are urgently looking for evidence of an epidemic of the disease associated with this farm in order to control and eliminate it,” she added.

“We have never seen a case of H5N8 in humans and the risk to public health is considered to be very low,” said Dr. Gavin Dabrera, a consultant for acute respiratory infections at PHE.

A spokesperson for the Food Standards Agency said: “Based on current scientific evidence, we recommend that bird flu poses a very low food safety risk to UK consumers.

“Poultry products, including properly cooked poultry and eggs, are safe to eat.”

Further investigation is underway to identify the most probable cause of the outbreak.

Wild birds migrating from mainland Europe during the winter can spread the disease to poultry and other captive birds.
