Studies show that vitamin B3 protects skin cells from the effects of UV exposure
Researchers have isolated the primary human keratinocytes from the skin of patients with non-melanoma skin cancer. These cells were then treated with three different concentrations of nicotinamide (NAM), a type of vitamin B3, for 18, 24, and 48 hours and exposed to UVB.
The results showed that pretreatment with 25 μM nicotinamide (NAM) 24 hours prior to UV irradiation protected skin cells from the effects of UV-induced oxidative stress, including DNA damage. NAM has been shown to enhance DNA repair and reduce expression of the DNA repair enzyme OGG1.
In addition, it reduced antioxidant expression and blocked local inflammation by showing reduced nitric oxide release, reactive oxygen species production, and iNOS protein expression.
“Our study has the potential to protect the skin from the effects of UV exposure and reduce the incidence of nonmelanoma skin cancer by increasing the consumption of vitamin B3, which is readily available in the daily diet. “It shows,” said research student Lara. Camilo, in a press release. “However, the protective effect of vitamin B3 is short-acting and should be taken 24-48 hours before exposure to sunlight.”
