Researchers investigate the effect of palm oil extract on mouse liver cells
Palm oil is rich in vitamin E compounds such as tocopherols and tocotrienols.
These compounds have antioxidant properties and protect cells from damage by toxic chemicals produced by metabolic processes. Although tocopherols are a widely known and studied compound, there is still much to learn about tocotrienols.
A team of researchers from Malaysia and Libya recently investigated the effects of tocotrienols extracted from palm oil on mouse hepatocytes.
The team investigated the expression levels of genes affected by the transcription factor Nrf2 and the translocation of the same factor into the cell nucleus. Nrf2 is known to upregulate Phase II drug metabolism in response to metabolic processes.

The team observed that the translocation of Nrf2 in mouse hepatocytes was dose-dependent and functionally related.
“The greatest effect of Nrf2 translocation on the hepatic cell nucleus after administration of palm oil extract was observed to occur 60 minutes after administration,” Abdullah added, “concentration of hepatic nucleus Nrf2. The increase corresponded to an increase in transcriptional levels of some Nrf2 regulatory genes. “
Palm oil is an economical source of vitamin E, and some studies have shown beneficial effects on the immune system, including antioxidant, anti-cancer, and cytoprotective effects.
