Cambodia wins the fight against malaria
Phnom Penh (Phnom Penh Post / ANN): During the first nine months of this year, 7,668 cases of malaria were reported, a 70% decrease compared to the same period last year, said Health Minister Mam Bun Heng. Last year there were 25,499 malaria patients.
The country has not reported malaria-related deaths for the third consecutive year.
Mr Bunghen said the kingdom was successful in preventing malaria when an initiative to eradicate malaria in Cambodia began on Tuesday at the Kampong Speu Province Building by 2023. The previous goal was to eliminate malaria-related deaths by 2020, which has been achieved.
The government’s new goal is to eradicate Plasmodium falciparum by 2023.
“In the first nine months of 2020, 754 Plasmodium falciparum were recorded in the kingdom, with a proportion of 0.07 per 1,000 people. The forecast for 2020 was 1.05 per 1,000 people, so This is a success, “he said.
The state with the highest incidence of Plasmodium falciparum is Mondulkiri (0.73), followed by Kampong Spoo (0.49), Ratanakiri (0.46) and Stung Treng (0.36), the minister said.
To be able to completely eliminate Plasmodium falciparum, measures titled “Eliminating the final stages of Plasmodium falciparum, 2020-2023” must be implemented.
The initiative begins with Kampong Spoo and extends to other states after a three-month evaluation.
Governor of Kampong Speu, Vei Samnang, told Post that malaria in his state has declined significantly over the past few years. There were 6,491 cases in 2018, 371 cases in 2019, and 1,925 cases this year. He said the mortality rate from the disease has been zero since 2018.
“In the meantime, we are facing a difficult situation due to the effects of Covid-19 and we need to take various precautions, but we are sticking to the guidelines of the government and the Ministry of Health.
