Years of bullying felt like a “freak show” after a carnivore ate my face when I was two years old.
A woman who developed a rare carnivorous illness and was bullied after removing most of her face said her cruel provocation made her feel like a “freak show.”
Janine Violet Light was only two years old when she was diagnosed with leukemia and developed a life-threatening condition called necrotizing fasciitis during treatment.

She was left with rotten tissue and the surgeon had to perform reconstructive surgery.
Janine, 35, who lives in Belfast, Northern Ireland, says she can’t go out with family and friends without being called, hoping that surgery will give her a second chance in her life.
Janine faces a cruel provocation because of her appearance.
She now hopes that Dr. Kongrit Chaiyasate, a plastic reconstruction microsurgery in Royal Oak, Michigan, will be able to reverse some of the effects of facial scarring through reconstruction surgery.
She states: “This surgery makes a big difference in my life, changes what I look like and gives me more confidence. It helps me feel like me.
“It’s difficult to go out to the store or walk around with my husband, friends and family because of verbal abuse, such as calling for names from young people.”

What is necrotizing fasciitis?
Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but serious bacterial infection that affects the tissues under the skin and the surrounding muscles and organs.
Bacteria do not eat meat, which is often referred to as “carnivorous” disease. Rather, they release toxins that damage nearby tissues.
The condition can start with a relatively small injury, such as a small cut, but can progress and worsen very quickly.
If it is not immediately recognized, the condition can be life-threatening.
Symptoms can develop quickly, with early signs:
- Small but painful cuts or scratches on the skin
- Severe pain proportional to skin damage

He says he is now “beyond” the surgery that Janine performed 20 years ago and wants to establish her facial harmony and facial movement.
“By connecting the nerve graft from the normal side to the affected side, Dr. Kongrit wants to restore her smile and blinking mechanism.
“Then I’ll put the muscles on the nerve graft so she can smile and blink, and I’d like to work on her previous reconstruction to fit the other side.

The surgery will take a day to complete, and Dr. Kongrit said the process is likely to be complicated and tedious due to the fact that the team deals with tiny blood vessels and nerves.
