Canada’s first rare swine flu mutant found in a patient in central Alberta
Alberta’s public health and agricultural authorities are investigating last month after a rare swine flu variant was first detected in Canada in patients in central Alberta.
In a joint statement with state veterinary director Dr. Keith Lehman on Wednesday, Health Director Dina Hinshaw said the case was only 27th in the world since 2005.
“A confirmed case of mutant influenza A (H1N2) v was detected in central Alberta,” Hinsho and Lehman said in a statement.
“This currently appears to be one isolated case and there is no increased risk to Alberta at this time. This is the only influenza case reported in Alberta by this flu season.”
Hinsho and Lehman said the virus was detected in mid-October when patients with flu-like symptoms sought treatment.
“Patients experienced mild symptoms and recovered soon after being tested,” they said. “At this time, there is no evidence that the virus has spread further.”
Public health investigation in progress
Health authorities working with Alberta’s agriculture and forestry have launched a public health survey to identify the source of the virus and ensure that it has not spread.
The state said it would continue to work closely with Alberta Health Services, Public Health Agency of Canada, and other partners throughout Canada.
“AHS will proactively provide influenza testing if residents of central Alberta participate in the COVID-19 test at the AHS Evaluation Center,” the statement said. “This test is optional and supports ongoing influenza surveillance in the region.
“We take this seriously, but Alberta needs to be aware that sporadic cases of influenza have been reported in North America over the last decade.
“Variant Influenza A (H1N2) is rare, with only 27 cases reported worldwide since 2005, and no previous cases in Canada.”
According to the statement, H1N2 is not a food-related disease and does not infect people through pork or other products derived from pigs. According to the statement, there are no risks associated with eating pork.
