Dr. Catherine Motherway, President of the Intensive Care Society, warns that intensive care units (ICUs) can only guarantee space if Covid-19 infection rates continue to decline.
Currently, 158 people across the country are receiving treatment at the ICU, and Dublin units are said to be under the highest pressure.
Dr. Katherine Motherway, president of the Intensive Care Society, said there was no room for complacency.
She said: “Definitely they [intensive care units] Dr. Motherway said the ICU is addressing patient influx by transferring “as needed”.
She said: “But we still have capacity within the system, which is within normal bed capacity in some areas and also within surge capacity.
“But it is absolutely essential that no one accepts it, assuming everything is going well. We need to keep their fertility figures low and flatten their curves.
“That’s really important,” she said.
In Ireland, 137 people died after Covid-19 contract, including 17 who died yesterday.
After an increase of 331 positive tests on Saturday, 4,604 people are now diagnosed with the disease in the country.
This includes 1,084 healthcare professionals.
Health Minister Simon Harris of the Ministry of Health has called for efforts to keep the reproductive rate of the disease low.
He said: “On March 16, if you were infected with Covid-19, you would probably have infected 4.3 other people.
“By the end of March, the number of others has dropped to 2.5, but that number needs to be less than one
“If the number falls below one, it means the virus does not persist in the community.
“That means that not everyone who gets sick has replaced himself … with another person who is infected with the virus.”

Yesterday, the Minister of Health announced measures to help nursing homes protect themselves from the outbreak of coronavirus.
There are 40 clusters in nursing homes. More than 3 Covid-19 cases have occurred in the facility within 72 hours.
Staff screening begins twice a day at the nursing home, with staff testing taking precedence. Access to personal protective equipment (PPE), expert advice, and training is provided.
