Researchers Develop Treatments for Deadly Silicosis Lung Conditions That Kill Tragedy
Researchers have discovered the world’s first potential cure for a deadly lung disease that has killed hundreds of patients nationwide.
This condition, called silicosis, was primarily caused by inhalation of silica dust from the cutting of manufactured stones and was considered incurable.
However, four patients with mild silicosis appear to have recovered this year after undergoing a total lung lavage or “lung washout” as part of a trial at Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) in Brisbane.
This process takes 3-4 hours to flush 25 liters of water from each lung.
“We’re literally drowning our lungs, so we start with very dirty lungs and wash them over time to clean them, like a washing machine rinse cycle,” said Professor Dunchambers of TPCH. It was. sunrise..
