In a critical development, scientists have identified synthetic mini-antibodies that have proven to be particularly effective in blocking the invasion of new coronaviruses into human cells.

The ability of SARS-CoV-2 to infect cells depends on the interaction between the viral spike protein and the human cell surface protein ACE2. Researchers at EMBL Hamburg, CSSB, Karolinska Institute, and the University of Zurich say the new synthetic mini-antibodies block RBD and may prevent the virus from invading human cells.

EMBL Hamburg searched existing libraries to find a body that could prevent SARS-CoV-2 from infecting human cells. Among the best binders, what is called “sybody 23” has proved to be particularly effective in blocking RBD.
