The Public Health Service has reported that 3,006 people have died since the onset of the crisis. This was 17 people over a day ago. Almost 198,000 people tested positive in the state.
According to Dr. Don Williamson, president of the Alabama Hospital Association, the 1,848 new cases reported were the highest in the day since early August. More than 1,020 patients were hospitalized with COVID-19, an increase of 45% from late September.
Williamson said the group would support an extension of the requirement in a state health order requiring face masks to expire on Sundays in public places. So is Dr. Mike Saag, an epidemiologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham who has survived COVID-19 and is treating sick patients.
“Now that the number of incidents has skyrocketed across the country in the last 30 days, it is needed more than ever,” says Saag.
Governor Kay Ivy’s office, which announced an extension of the previous order, did not immediately respond to the email asking for comment.
