Deaths from unintended fentanyl increased by 64% between 2018 and 2019, while prescription drug deaths increased by nearly 12%.
This is according to 2020 San Diego County Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force Report Card Released today. The report card provides a variety of data to measure prescription drug misuse issues in the region by examining multiple factors and data points over the last five years in San Diego County.
In 2019, a total of 645 people died from unintentional overdose from prescription drugs, illicit drugs and alcohol. They include:
- 151 deaths from fentanyl compared to 92 reported the previous year. That number continued to grow in 2020.. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid primarily from Mexico that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and 25 to 50 times more potent than heroin.
- The death toll of 275 people from prescription drugs (opioids and non-opioids) has increased from 245 in 2018.
- 124 heroin deaths, up from 105 reported the previous year.
In addition to mortality, the report card tracks additional key indicators of opioid misuse in the region. It also shows that (the recent years when numbers are available depend on statistics):
- Visits to 6,162 regional emergency rooms in 2018, compared to 6,607 in 2017. Last year’s data will not be available until 2021.
- 11 lessth Graders reported the use of prescription drugs in 2019 rather than 2015.
- Almost half of the adults arrested reported misuse of prescription drugs in 2019.
