Studies show that COVID-19 and its limitations may exacerbate tinnitus

A new study from Toronto-UK shows that restrictions surrounding COVID-19 and the virus may exacerbate the symptoms of tinnitus.

Study from Anglia Ruskin University, It was published in Frontiers in Public Health on Thursday. We surveyed 3,103 people from 48 countries about their tinnitus experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was found that 40% of respondents who experienced COVID-19 symptoms also exacerbated tinnitus symptoms.

Tinnitus is independent of ambient noise, but is a common condition of tinnitus, ringing, rushing, or roaring. Statistics Canada 2019 Survey 37% of Canadians showed that they experienced tinnitus the previous year.

Fifty-eight percent of respondents who tested positive for the virus reported exacerbation of tinnitus symptoms, but only 26 tested positive.

“I didn’t notice it because I was too sick at the time, but it’s definitely getting worse because I’ve noticed it,” a 55-year-old woman from the UK wrote in a questionnaire.

Given the proportion of respondents with COVID-19 symptoms who have experienced exacerbation of tinnitus, researchers believe that physicians should pay attention to the patient’s condition.

“People infected with COVID-19 need to monitor changes in hearing-related problems, such as the onset and worsening of tinnitus,” the report said. “It is most likely that there is also a cohort of patients who experience the onset of tinnitus during this period and need access to clinical care for tinnitus.”

The study also examined life with tinnitus during a pandemic and found that the experience varied greatly from person to person. For example, some respondents reported that they were more likely to stay home to relieve and relax their symptoms, while others felt that silence exacerbated the problem.

“I’m more aware of tinnitus because I’m trapped in my house alone and can’t talk to anyone,” said a 45-year-old in the United Kingdom.

Overall, 34% of respondents found that pandemic-induced lifestyle changes exacerbated tinnitus.

“People who are the most socially isolated, lonely and sleep deprived are at greatest risk of increasing tinnitus severity,” the researchers said. “This highlights tinnitus heterogeneity, many respond well, others struggle during the pandemic and need additional help.”
