Dr. Rachel Levin, Pennsylvania’s Minister of Health, provided updates on the status of the COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday.
Vaccines are one of three tools Levine said are part of the answer to stop the spread of the coronavirus, as well as containment and mitigation. Six companies are currently working on the development of the vaccine and must be approved as safe and effective by the US Food and Drug Administration, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other federal authorities before distribution.
Pfizer, one of the companies developing the vaccine, is likely to distribute the first vaccine, Levine said, but the schedule for when it will be undecided. Once the vaccine begins to be distributed, there are three phases.
The first phase sends vaccines to healthcare workers, essential workers, and those working with vulnerable groups. The second stage will continue to be distributed to the same group, and the third stage will distribute the vaccine to the general public.
Levine noted the 2020-21 flu season and the importance of flu vaccination, saying that the COVID-19 vaccine is somewhat similar.
“It’s not a magical cure for the coronavirus,” she said, and while people who have been vaccinated against the flu can get the flu, vaccines fight to reduce their severity. The COVID-19 vaccine does the same.
“Hopefully, the symptoms are less severe and won’t last long,” she said.
Immunization of Pennsylvania as a whole is likely to take “months to months,” Levine said.
Of the six vaccines under development, five require a second shot — Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine requires only one.
As soon as the vaccine was fully tested, the federal government granted it an Emergency Permit (EUA) and plans to ship it to the state, PennLive reported. According to Reuters, Pfizer could apply for approval in October and late November.
