Lost life: a man loved by many, dies alone in Rome at age 80
ROME — The way Enrico Giancomoni lived in Rome for more than 80 years had nothing to do with the way he died.
According to Giancomoni’s son, he was a good man, taking his responsibility seriously, but did not make him unkind by the pressure of life. He has forged a sister family and a construction business that supports his family. He hired ten when there were enough customers.
After retirement, he found pleasure as his grandson’s attentive “non-no” and talked to neighbors and shopkeepers while running groceries and cooking with his wife. Later, fever and stomach bugs occurred, dyspnea and ambulance calls.
He dressed with the help of his son trying to accompany him and arrived at the apartment door. Paramedics in protective gear stopped the son—guards and hospital visits were banned in case the father became infected with the virus. He died two weeks later.

Enrico Giancomoni was born in the year Italy entered World War II. A global pandemic compared to the struggle of war is killing more lives in Italy than in any other country.
Italy reached its sad benchmark in the same week as the March 16 deployment in Giancomoni’s ambulance rides, positive test results, and intensive care.
His wife and son were ordered to quarantine at home after the infection was confirmed. When he died on March 30, they were approaching the end of 14 days.
The day after his father’s death, Roberto Giacomoni, 50, sat at the desk where his dad played computer chess and played crossword puzzles. His mother, Julia, cried nearby while he was working to take his father’s body to the crematorium. The couple had been married for 55 years.
Enrico Giancomoni was an immutable provider, but funding was always tight. He loved the sea, one of Italy’s wealth, and set out on a family excursion where possible. Buying a two-bedroom apartment in a working-class neighborhood in 1987 on their top floor was sacrificed.
Retirement was accompanied by a diagnosis of lung cancer, but he lived 10 years after surgery. Then the coronavirus was hit.
During the first days after hospitalization, the family was able to meet him and chat by video call. But when he was ventilated, the family had to rely on daily updates from a busy doctor. The last call was at 1:30 am on March 30.
Roberto Giacomoni suffers from having his father overcome the trial alone. His heart often looks back on the night his father was taken away.
“Don’t worry, Daddy, I’ll come with your suitcase tomorrow,” recalled Roberto Giacomoni to his father. “Okay. See you tomorrow.”
Should he know that he was saying goodbye? This is a question he may have difficulty answering until a child aged 8 and 3 has reason to mourn his father.
“He did not expect this,” said Roberto Giacomoni. “He wants things to get better, and all he can do is tell him,” Dad, get stronger. As you can see, this is a success and a mere memory. “
