Colorado prison virus outbreak infects 859 prisoners and 66 workers
Colorado Springs, Colorado (AP) — El Paso County Prison, Colorado, reported that 859 of the 1,246 prisoners detained on Sunday were COVID-19-positive, along with 66 employees.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office reported that two of its employees were hospitalized over the weekend, Gazette reported.
Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Deborah Mynatt did not disclose the status of the two hospitalized employees, or whether they were private employees or agents, due to privacy concerns.
Authorities first reported the outbreak on October 26, when eight asymptomatic prisoners were COVID-19 positive. Mynatt compared the outbreak to a “wildfire” and said authorities were trying to prevent the virus from spreading further.
Sheriff office officials reported that since the pandemic began in March, 927 prison inmates and 78 officials have tested overall positive. Since Monday, prisoners have been tested 1,755 times and employees have been tested 782 times, including those who have undergone multiple tests, according to Meinat.
The number of infections is thought to be much higher because many people have not been tested, and studies show that people can get the virus without feeling sick.
