This nurse shows how fast bacteria spread, even with gloves

To stop the spread of the coronavirus, many states have home orders and travel restrictions on where they can go.

But that doesn’t mean that many well-intentioned people may not be unknowingly exposed to bacteria.

On a recent trip to a grocery store, Molly Rixie, a former emergency room nurse in Saginaw, Michigan, told CNN she noticed that many people were wearing gloves.

But what was not so good? All cross contamination she saw.

Lixey has decided to show in a ready-to-use Facebook video how fast and easy it is to spread bacteria in grocery stores.

“I was drawing some pictures around the house and thought it was the perfect medium to use to explain this (cross contamination),” she told CNN did. “I’m afraid that people believe that wearing gloves is safe and don’t let them know that they may be harming themselves or others.” She said.

In her video, Rixie simulates going to a grocery store, starting with putting on gloves, grabbing a mobile phone when leaving the car, cleaning a shopping cart, and grabbing toilet paper. She uses the cardboard as a cell phone and dips her fingers into a plate of paint that symbolizes bacteria in her hands as a result of grabbing toilet paper.

“But it’s on my gloves (germs), it’s okay? It’s on my gloves,” she said in a video. “But, as I walked and the phone rang, I touched my hands several times together, and when I reached my phone, I received a text message from my husband.”

Lixey is pretending to be walking through a grocery store, and when imitating picking up new items to add to her cart, she returns her finger to paint, mimicking the bacteria picking up throughout this process.

“I understand that as a nurse, I have received extensive training in the use of PPE, but not many civilians,” she said. “They are very scary now. They do everything to protect themselves, but it’s important that they do it properly.”

Eventually, after answering the simulated phone, the paint wrapped around her cheeks, symbolizing the bacteria that might have spread on her face. Rixie shows that paint was wrapped around a makeshift phone that he had, both after and after the gloves were removed, eventually causing cross-contamination.

What is her general message? “If you don’t plan to wash your hands every time you touch something, wearing gloves makes no sense,” she said in a video.

That’s because if someone picks it up, whatever is on the glove will move to the phone. Next, unless the person disinfects the phone, the bacteria on the phone will be transferred to the hand after the gloves are removed and the person touches the device.

Lixey currently works in a clinic infusion clinic. She said she would return to working in the hospital if the virus continued to spread further in her area.

She is not the only one using social media to educate about the importance of understanding how bacteria spread.

In the video, Earl’s son dips his finger into a bowl of water sprinkled with pepper. When he puts his finger up, it is covered with pepper and simulates the way bacteria attach to the skin. Next, she pumps soap into a clean finger, and when he dips it into a bowl, pepper spreads away from his finger.

Earls acknowledged that he was happy to pass the experiment to other parents and that the visual lesson worked with his son. In fact, now he wants to “hand wash” every time he passes the wash basin.
