Scientists claim new ‘smart toilet’ technology can look for signs of disease

Going to the toilet may not be the same again, thanks to scientists who claim to have invented a device that can be installed in the toilet to detect various signs of stool and urine illness.

Gadgets that fit inside the bowl use cameras, test strips, and motion sensing technology to analyze the sediment and send the data to a secure cloud server.

Researchers said their so-called “smart toilet” technology could help individuals genetically susceptible to certain conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome, prostate cancer, and renal failure.

Dr. Sanjib Gambir, professor and director of radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine in the United States, and author of the study, said:

“People were laughing a bit as I thought, not only it seemed like an interesting idea, but also a bit strange.”

Gadgets analyze the basic biochemical composition of excrement, and urine samples undergo physical and molecular analysis, while stool evaluation is based on physical properties.

According to researchers, the data collected from the samples can reveal biomarkers for 10 different diseases, from infections and bladder cancer to renal failure.

Techniques that fall into a category known as continuous health monitoring are being tested on 21 participants, but researchers have identified the potential health benefits of toilet systems in large clinical trials. States that it needs to be evaluated.
