Near home: Kingston health officials issue petition when COVID-19 cases surge
Kingston-Kingston public health officials are updating warnings to residents to stay in the area after 10 new cases of COVID-19 were identified on Friday.
Currently, there are 26 new examples of coronavirus activity in the city.
On Friday, Dr. Kieran Moore, a health officer at Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox, and Adington, released a video on social media warning residents to take precautions.
“Our risk is getting higher and higher,” explained Dr. Moore. “The number of cases we are following is increasing.”
Sisters Catherine and Yasminenam remain in the “green zone” of Ontario, so they are divided on how they feel about these new numbers.
“That’s a little alarming,” says Catherine Nam. “In the beginning, everyone had taken so many precautions.”
“I’m not too worried,” says Yasmine Nam. “I think that it is all right.”
This week, three new outbreaks were declared, including one healthcare worker in a long-term care home in the trillium care community at the western end of the city.
At Virgin Catholic Elementary School in Lourdes, an outbreak was declared after six cases were found, two associated with a school infection. Authorities say the risk remains low, but students were switched to distance learning until November 20th.
Like many previous cases in the region, new cases are related to travel. As a result, public health officials have issued new warnings not to leave the area or accept guests outside the town.
“There is a continuous community expansion in the Greater Toronto Area, and there are risks everywhere in that community,” Dr. Moore said in a video. “So if it’s just for work or life and death, travel.”
Kingston’s numbers are significantly lower than in cities like Toronto and Ottawa, but residents like Wally Alderis and Christine McCullough are cautiously heading for the winter months.
“It limits what you can do now,” says Wally Alderis. “When we come to Christmas, we worry about things like being around our family, but yeah, (just) stick to the same routine.”
“We are still going to come here and enjoy a walk,” McCullough adds.
