Studies find that “transformational” and cheap polypills can reduce heart attacks and strokes by up to 40%
Polypill is a combination of three different blood pressure medications (atenolol, ramipril, and “water pill” hydrochlorothiazide) and the cholesterol-lowering statin simvastatin. These are all generic drugs. Polypills can be taken alone or with aspirin.
Polypills are widely used in Europe, but are rarely sold or used in the United States. Specific pills for this study were made in India.
More than 5,700 volunteers from around the world participated in the study, and researchers followed it for nearly five years.
Male volunteers were over 50 and females were over 55. All volunteers were considered to have a moderate risk of heart disease due to underlying illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
The group was divided into people who took low doses of aspirin, polypill, polypill and aspirin, or placebo.
Polypills containing aspirin reduced heart problems and mortality by 31% and minimized side effects. Side effects included dizziness and low blood pressure. People who continued to take the pill without interruption found that their risk of heart problems was reduced by 40%.
About 4% of people in the polypill and aspirin group had heart problems such as stroke or heart attack, were followed up or died in this study, compared to about 6% in the placebo group.
The results of this study are similar to previous studies. A 2003 study found that polypills could prevent 88% of heart attacks and 80% of strokes.
Heart disease is the largest murderer in the United States, accounting for nearly a quarter of all registered deaths.
