That’s how Manitoba health leaders describe our state health care workers.
Shared Health’s Lanette Siragusa says last week there was a huge demand on our healthcare system. Siragusa said a week ago he provided the latest information on developing plans to enhance the capacity of acute care. As of Sunday, 220 people were hospitalized in Manitoba with COVID-19, 41 of whom were in the intensive care unit (ICU).
As of Friday, Manitoba has 93 ICU beds. Siragusa says he added 10 beds last week. She states that 26 of the 63 patients on mechanical ventilation on Friday morning were infected with COVID-19. A total of 85 beds were used.
In addition, 563 non-emergency and selective and surgical procedures have been postponed since October 26th.
“These postponements are needed to shift resources to address the COVID-related surge in patients,” said Siragusa. “While efforts are underway to enhance this capability throughout the healthcare system, we do not want to underestimate the burden these cases put on our healthcare system and this on our healthcare professionals.”
Siragusa says Manitoba’s abilities are not infinite. In fact, she fears how more than 300 cases per day will affect beds and staff in the coming days and weeks.
According to Silagsa, Manitoba has ventilators, equipment, fixtures and space. However, she states that the system relies on doctors and staff.
“They are moving forward and are currently training new teams to work in new areas,” she says. “They are isolated from their families and loved ones and are making a lot of changes in their lives so that they can be there for you.”

“I’m relieved and sad. There are no rallies. Most companies are closed. Unfortunately, blockades are unavoidable now. Our healthcare facilities and workers are struggling. Silagusa says for healthcare professionals that it is scary and exhausted, sometimes feeling like being in a tunnel and needing to see the light. She says she is really looking forward to the restrictions starting to reduce the number of cases.
“I think it brings some relief to people,” she says. “They aren’t going to disappoint Manitoba, but it’s a two-way path. Manitoba needs to help those healthcare professionals.”
