Oregon officials urged to investigate COVID-19 at mink farms | Oregon

SALEM — The Environmental Group is seeking an investigation into possible COVID-19 infections and between humans and animals on approximately 12 Oregon mink farms, following outbreaks in other states and countries.

The Center for Biodiversity sent a letter to the state health authorities and the Ministry of Agriculture on November 6, calling the situation an urgent public health threat.

Since August, the USDA has confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Operation Mink in Utah and Wisconsin. This killed at least 13,400 animals.

In Denmark, 12 people were infected with a mutant strain of COVID-19 that spreads from mink to humans. The country is the world’s largest producer of mink skin and fur. The Danish government has ordered the nationwide population of farmed mink (15 million) to be disposed of to avoid compromising future vaccines against the virus.

According to the World Health Organization, mink acts as a reservoir for COVID-19 and may “provide a risk of virus spills from mink to humans.”

To date, six countries have discovered COVID-19 on mink farms: the United States, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Italy.

In a letter to Oregon authorities, the Center for Biodiversity said the risk of similar cases in the state is no longer theoretical and it is time to investigate.

“Therefore, it is highly recommended to start with the facilities where the animals are most concentrated and immediately dispatch inspectors to all mink breeding facilities to conduct investigations and ensure that these facilities do not compromise public health. I will do it, “says the letter. “In addition, we call for the immediate public disclosure of information on cases of COVID-19 infection on mink farms in Oregon to promote public health and safety through transparency.”

Andrea Cantu-Schomas, a spokeswoman for the Oregon Department of Agriculture, said the two agencies are cooperating in responding to the letter.

According to Cantu-Schomas, there are no immediate plans to investigate the state’s mink farms. Rather, ODA and state veterinarians are working with the mink industry to provide information on biosecurity, along with specific steps to prevent COVID-19 from being deployed at the facility.

Oregon has 11 licensed mink farms with an estimated 438,327 animals. It is the fourth largest fur producer after Wisconsin, Utah and Idaho.

According to Cantu-Schomas, ODA has not received any reports of mink death from COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines do not recommend testing unless there are consistent symptoms on potentially exposed mink farms.

“ODA is not currently testing because there are no reports of mortality in Oregon,” she said.

Michael Whelan, secretary-general of Fur Commission USA, a national organization representing mink farmers in the United States, did not respond to a request for comment. As of 2018, there are 245 mink fur farms in 22 states, producing 3.1 million furs worth $ 82.6 million.

The Biodiversity Center says it does not want to spread vigilance, but these facilities may have contributed to the spread of COVID-19 throughout the state, either intentionally or unknowingly, or “Denmark. COVID-19 as discovered in. “

“We encourage you to pay immediate attention to this urgent public health threat,” the group wrote.
