A cup of coffee a day during pregnancy can increase the risk of stillbirth

Studies show that just one cup of coffee a day during pregnancy can increase the risk of stillbirth.

  • A UK study examined the average daily caffeine intake of 1,000 pregnant women
  • Every 100 mg of caffeine per day increased the risk of stillbirth by 27%
  • The risk of stillbirth was 85% higher when women drank 100 mg of energy drinks

Studies show that drinking a cup of coffee a day during pregnancy can increase the risk of stillbirth.

A UK study of more than 1,000 pregnant women, including 290 stillborns, examined daily caffeine intake.

100 mg of caffeine per day during pregnancy (equivalent to less than 1 mug of filter coffee) was associated with a 27% increased risk of stillbirth.

Caffeine is thought to constrict blood vessels in the placenta and can reduce the oxygen that reaches the fetus.

Babies in the womb can get rid of caffeine about one-third as fast as their mother, causing arrhythmias.

A UK study of 1,000 women found that caffeine intake through coffee and energy drinks increased the risk of stillbirth, but no association with tea was found.

A UK study of 1,000 women found that caffeine intake through coffee and energy drinks increased the risk of stillbirth, but no association with tea was found.

As with alcohol, experts are divided on whether pregnant women can safely consume caffeine.

The NHS recommends a daily limit of 200 mg.

Energy drinks can be particularly harmful, with women drinking 100 mg of energy drinks a day being 85% more likely than if they had no risk of stillbirth, but drinking 100 mg of instant coffee a day. And the risk seems to increase by a third.

The risk of cola is almost a quarter higher.

Professor Alexander Heesel, the first author of the study and director of Tommy’s Center for Maternal and Fetal Health Research at the University of Manchester, said: “People shouldn’t be worried about drinking coffee from time to time because this is a relatively small risk, but our study found that even with fairly low daily caffeine levels, the risk of stillbirth is high. I will.

The study, in the European Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, enrolled 290 stillborn and 729 pregnant women in 41 obstetric units in Midland and northern England.

How much caffeine does your drink or treat contain? And what does the NHS say about that risk?

The NHS advises pregnant women to limit their daily intake of caffeine to 200 milligrams. This is roughly equivalent to two mugs of instant coffee.

The· Health services website warns:’High levels of caffeine during pregnancy can reduce the birth weight of the baby and increase the risk of health problems in later years. Too much caffeine can also cause miscarriage.

We also provide a guide on the average amount of caffeine in a product.

Instant coffee 1 mug: 100mg

Filter coffee 1 mug: 140mg

1 cup of tea: 75mg

1 can of cola: 40mg

1 can (250 ml) of energy drink: Up to 80mg – Larger cans may contain up to 160mg

1 plain chocolate (50g): Less than 25 mg

1 bottle of milk chocolate (50g): Less than 10 mg

According to the World Health Organization’s definition of 300 mg or more per day, women who stillborn after 28 weeks of gestation may have 2.3 times more caffeine intake per day.

This was true even when researchers considered other factors that increased the likelihood of stillbirth, such as age and smoking during pregnancy.

Energy drinks contain 103.9 mg of caffeine, while the average cup of filtered coffee contains 120 mg.

A cup of instant coffee contains about 81.5 mg, a cup of tea contains 54.9 mg, a cup of cola contains 38.5 mg, and green tea contains 27 mg.

In this study, tea was not associated with stillbirth.

The majority of women reduce their caffeine intake during pregnancy, but studies have found that 1 in 40 actually consume more.

In the UK, one in 250 pregnancies ends in stillbirth.

Dr Mary Ross Davie of the Royal College of Midwives added: ‘It is very helpful for both midwives and pregnant women to clarify that this Tommy study requires pregnant women to reduce caffeine from all sources, not just coffee.

“One energy drink contains half (200 mg) of the maximum daily allowance for caffeine recommended by pregnant women, but she may not be aware of it.

“For midwives, obstetricians and women, it is very valuable to understand more about this critical issue and we can continue to reduce the number of stillbirths in the UK each year.”
