Germany could dispose of up to 70,000 chickens due to bird flu found on another farm
Officials said on Tuesday that bird flu was found in another poultry farm in Germany and a program is underway to slaughter up to 70,000 poultry.
A spokesman for Landkreis Rostock, a local government official, said H5N8 bird flu had been identified on a farm near Rostock in eastern Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Approximately 4,500 chickens need to be disposed of on the farm, but there are several locations on the farm, which could reach a total of 70,000, the spokesman said.
“From a veterinary medical point of view, up to 70,000 poultry need to be disposed of in several places to combat the outbreak of the disease and prevent it from spreading further,” a spokesman said. “Preparation has begun.”
Meanwhile, in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany, on Tuesday, H5N8 was reported to have slaughtered about 1,000 ducks, geese and chickens on farms in the Kreis Nordfriesland region.
A series of bird flu outbreaks have been reported in Europe in the last few weeks, and wild birds are suspected of spreading the disease.
Approximately 16,100 turkeys were slaughtered after the bird flu was found in another German poultry farm in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, officials said.
Denmark has ordered the removal of 25,000 chickens after discovering H5N8 bird flu on the farm, officials said Monday.
Other cases have been reported in France and the Netherlands. The UK ordered the disposal of 13,000 birds after detecting a case on a farm in northwest England.
Although the risk to humans from this disease is considered low, past outbreaks among birds on the farm required extensive slaughter programs to contain them.
