China’s COVID Vaccine Looks Safe and Effective-Consumer Health News
Wednesday, November 18, 2020 (HealthDay News)-China’s COVID-19 vaccine appears to be safe and effective, with early test results suggesting, but one expert carefully reviews the findings It states that it needs to be done.
The CoronaVac vaccine is based on the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 virus. It was tested in a Phase 1/2 clinical trial involving more than 700 healthy volunteers aged 18-59 years recruited in China between April 16th and May 5th.

Even at the lowest dose tested (3 micrograms), participants showed strong antibody responses within 2 weeks of the second and final doses. Shots were given every 14 days.
The levels of antibodies caused by the vaccine were lower than those of patients with recovered coronavirus, but researchers said they still believed that the vaccine could provide protection from the virus.
They said the main purpose of the study was to evaluate the immune response and safety of the vaccine. The vaccine is not designed to assess how effective it is in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection.

After considering side effects and other factors, the researchers determined that a dose of 3 mcg stimulated the best antibody response. This will be further investigated in the ongoing Phase 3 trial.
“Our findings show that CoronaVac can elicit a rapid antibody response within 4 weeks of immunization by administering the vaccine twice at 14-day intervals, which makes the vaccine an emergency during a pandemic. “In the long run, if the risk of COVID-19 is low, two doses at one-month intervals rather than two-week intervals may be stronger and potentially longer lasting. “As with all Phase 2 trials, the results need to be interpreted with caution until the Phase 3 results are published,” he writes. “But you still need to be careful after completing the Phase 3 exam and after getting your license.”
