Newborn in Louisiana, mother of COVID-19 died after premature birth
A newborn baby in Louisiana died on Sunday after a mother with COVID-19 had a premature birth.
William Clark, a coroner at the East Baton Rouge Parish, said his mother had to be hospitalized last week for respiratory problems and to have a ventilator. She tested positive for the coronavirus and suffered from high fever and shortness of breath, Clark said at a virtual press conference broadcast on Facebook Live.

“She became premature and eventually prematurely,” Clark did not disclose her mother’s name and age.
“The baby wasn’t able to survive because she was so immature,” the coroner said.
According to Baton Rouge defenders, the baby’s test results are pending.
But Clark said state health officials are still nominating COVID-19 as the cause of the death of babies born at 22 weeks of gestation.
“We all agree that in this scenario, due to the positive nature of the mother, this is considered a COVID-19-related death,” he said. “If she was not positive for COVID-19, did not need ventilation support, did not have shortness of breath or virus-associated hypoxia, she would probably have had a different outcome without preterm birth.”
The coroner said the case was the first of its kind in Louisiana, severely hit by the coronavirus, and had 14,867 patients as of Monday, including 512 deaths. Clark said that 27 parish people in the East Baton Rouge parish died from the virus.
The coroner has no updates on the mother’s condition, but said she was alive. He said he hoped that this “incredibly sad incident” would emphasize the need to follow the order of social distance being enforced throughout the state.
