A hospital consultant who gave birth to twins during a coronavirus coma describes the birth of a baby as a “miracle.”
Rheumatoid consultant Perpetual Uke was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham when infected with Covid-19 in April and placed on a medically-induced coma ventilator when the condition worsened. ..
The doctor decided to give birth to the baby by Caesarean section in case the mother did not recover. Her due date was mid-July, but the baby gave birth in just 26 weeks.
But when she woke up from the coma and lost sight of the ridge, she feared she had lost her baby.
“I couldn’t see the bumps and thought the baby was gone.” She told the metro.. “What’s out of this is a miracle of what happened.
“We are all doing very well. I remember getting sick and being taken by an ambulance. After that, I fell into a coma.
“Getting out of the coma was the worst part. I had a nightmare. I was delusional, I couldn’t see the bumps, I thought the baby was gone and the whole family died.
“It was a very worrying time for my husband and children. I couldn’t see my baby for more than two weeks after I woke up.”
The baby, a girl named Sochika Palmer and a boy named Osinachi Pascal, weighed only 765g (27oz) and 850g (30oz) at birth. They were taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Birmingham Women’s Hospital while receiving recovery.
Sixteen days after she got out of the coma and began her path to recovery, Uke’s worried husband, Matthew, had their prayers answered, she told Metro.
Later, a doctor at Birmingham City Hospital reunited with the baby, her husband, and her two other children (Nnamdi Ronald, 12 years old, Chisimdi Claire, 11 years old).
“Going home was a real healing point for me,” she said. “Now the whole family is together and we are all very, very happy.”
