For the first time scientists discover a way to detect tinnitus
Non-profit organization Bionics Institute in Australia Deakin University worked together to develop an objective method for measuring tinnitus. The findings were recently published in the journal PLOS ONE..
Tinnitus occurs when you hear phantom sounds such as buzzing, ringing, and growling. Noise can be persistent, subtle, loud, or occasionally. Also, although it is not a disease, it may have symptoms such as hearing loss and ear infections.
In its chronic form, tinnitus can lead to stress, cognitive dysfunction, and even depression. However, it is often mild and affects about 20% of adults.
Existing research on tinnitus
Previous animal and human studies have associated tinnitus with the central nervous system, the auditory region of the brain. A Survey Since 2013, it has been suggested that symptoms are the result of “abnormal activity in multiple overlapping brain networks.” They also suggested that activity in the auditory cortex affects the magnitude of phantom noise.
Despite how common tinnitus is, there are no clinical trials to measure and evaluate tinnitus. In addition, a recent study at Anglia Ruskin University explains how the coronavirus affected people with pre-existing tinnitus, no cure, and symptoms after infection.

Objective measurement
In a new study, researchers used a brain imaging technique called Functional near infrared spectroscopy (FNIRS) Here light is used to measure oxygen activity in the brain. This was accompanied by a machine learning algorithm for assessing brain activity associated with tinnitus.
Twenty-five volunteers and 21 controls with chronic tinnitus wore caps that shined light on their heads to record reflected light. Lights change depending on the resting state and how the brain responds to auditory and visual stimuli.
The cap contains 16 sources and 16 detectors, forming pairs called channels that cover the frontotemporal, temporal, and occipital cortical areas. The auditory stimulus consisted of short segments of pink noise. This is a waterfall-like sound that masks unwanted noise through earphones. The visual stimulus consisted of a circular checkerboard pattern that evoked a cortical response.
“The temporal-occipital connection showed a significant increase in loudness subject assessment,” the researchers wrote, for those with ear ringing. Imaging also showed which cortical areas are active in tinnitus, such as the auditory cortex and frontal cortex. Machine learning algorithms classify whether a patient has tinnitus and the severity level of the symptoms.
Studies have shown that the combination of fNIRS and machine learning classified patients with tinnitus with an accuracy of 78.3%. The algorithm also had 87.32% accuracy in assessing individuals with mild / mild and moderate / severe tinnitus.
One of the limitations of this study is that near-infrared light cannot reach deep into the cerebral cortex. There are several subtypes of tinnitus, but caps can only classify common tinnitus. In conclusion, the researchers said that objective measurement of tinnitus could help develop new therapies and assess patient progression.
