Dutch Dispose of 190,000 Chickens After Bird Flu Outbreak-World
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Dutch officials have disposed of about 190,000 chickens after a highly contagious bird flu outbreak occurred in at least two poultry farms.
Healthcare workers slaughtered about 100,000 hens at a poultry farm in Hekendolp, a suburb of Gouda, and 90,000 chicks in Witmarsum, north of Friesland.
In both cases, “a highly contagious strain of the H5 mutant” was suspected, the ministry said in a statement.
He added that there were no other poultry farms within a 1km radius of the outbreak.
“Both farms have been cleared to prevent further spread of the disease,” the ministry said.
Seasonal avian influenza has been detected on various farms throughout the Netherlands since October, mainly due to migratory birds.
On October 23, Dutch Agriculture Minister Carola Schouten imposed preventative indoor containment on all commercial poultry farms after the discovery of two swan carrying the highly contagious H5N8 avian influenza.
